We lay on the back with our eyes closed. The arms are away from the body with the palms facing the ceiling. The legs are a bit spread and the toes are falling to the side.
We consciously focus on our breath through the belly. There's no need to push the thoughts away, we just observe what comes to our mind and we allow the thoughts to pass us by as clouds.
Benefits of Savasana
Savasana or Corpse pose calmes down our nervous system and allows fatigued muscles to relax. It relieves high blood pressure, insomnia, mild depression and fatigue. It is during Savasana that we create body memory, saving the info of the class so that our body can reproduce it.
Ideally we spend 10 to 20 minutes in Savasana. For most people, this is the hardest part of a yoga class. It is very difficult to stop the mind and to focus on our breath. Once you get used to Savasana however, you will start to crave it and you will experience it as the best moment of the class.
Think of Savasana as a gift to yourself. Allow yourself this moment of stillness in our fast paced world. It is a moment where you don't have any responsibilities, nor worries or cares. You don't need to do anything , you can just be.
The next time you go to a yoga class, make sure you don't skip Savasana and learn to enjoy it.
